Berry and Carla Bortz, assisted by their children, Brandon, Amber and Darnell, are the owners of  CB Farms, a farm and ranch operation located four miles south of Preston, Kansas.  The operation may seem diversified but is actually very integrated and includes registered Black Angus, a commercial cattle herd, feeder cattle, a small feedlot and produces wheat, corn, soybeans, cotton, sunflowers, silage, alfalfa and milo, both irrigated and dry land.

Berry and Carla both grew up on long established Kansas farms, descendants of many farm families, and have been farming together since they graduated from Kansas State University in 1982.  It is their belief that to be sustainable, the operation has to be economical while not only conserving the land but actually improving it.

They believe in a complete systems approach to managing their cattle business. They want their cattle to perform in all segments of the industry, all the way from cow calf producer to the feedlot to the packer. They encourage transparency of each segment so that feedback can flow both directions, performance can be monitored with objective parameters and they can all participate in the ultimate goal of providing a desirable product to the consumer from which all can derive an acceptable standard of living. Because they participate in all segments of the industry and own stock in USPB which allow them to market source and age verified cattle they understand the need for fertile, feed efficient, low maintenance, caring brood cows that produce fast growing feed efficient calves that deliver the highest grading carcasses possible while sustaining profitability. CB Farms has been the recipient of the Banker's Conservation Award, Banker's Soil Conservation Award, Banker's Association Water Award, NRCS Shelterbelt Award,  Kansas Master Farmer and Master Homemaker, Beef Improvement Commercial Producer Improvement Award and Farm Bureau Century Farm.
